Dogs on Thursday: Annie

"Annie and Molly had lived with their caregiver in Florida since they were pups. But these two red and white dogs -sister Cavalier King Charles Spaniels— saw their lives change suddenly when they were five years old. That’s when their owner passed away. Taken in by a rescue agency, the pair was placed together in a new home in Virginia. They were barely settled in when they lost that home as well, due to no fault on their part. A home willing to take both sisters was proving difficult to find (after some time in foster care). It was beginning to look like these girls, who had been together their whole lives, might need to be separated for them to ever find a new home.

Meanwhile, in New Jersey, sisters Sadie and Diana were grieving over the losses of two of their beloved dogs. Tara, a liver and white Brittany, lost her courageous battle against cancer. Then, just a week after losing Tara, the sisters found themselves back at the animal hospital with their boy Cooper, a red and white Brittany, who was in advanced lung failure. Both deaths, so close together, were heartbreaking to Sadie, Diana and their remaining dog, Emma.

Although not nearly ready emotionally, Sadie and Diana considered adopting another dog because Emma was in a severe depression, having lost her best friends. Their now lone Brittany refused to leave the living room even at night when she would normally be tucked into bed with Diana. It was the room that all three dogs had played in together their whole lives. When left alone now, even if only for a moment, Emma would sit in the living room and let out the most sorrowful howl. Sadie and Diana’s hearts were broken. Emma’s seemed to be broken too. Perhaps a companion for Emma would help?"

That's the way the story I wrote, "They Find You", starts and though some details are changed (like names and places), it's the story of how Annie & Molly and my aunts Sally & Dianne would come to find each another - both pairs in need, both exactly when they needed each other the most.

As you know, I do special needs rescue. I love it and talk about the special animals in my life all the time, so I guess it's bound to rub off on those who love me. Well, when my aunts found themselves looking for a new dog to add to their family, it was proving difficult - after looking at a few dogs, they were getting a little dis-hearted about the whole thing. One dog's foster didn't seem like they were actually going to give the dog up and the other dog they met with didn't get along with Emma, my aunts' now lone dog and their main reason for looking for a new dog so soon.

Just when they were thinking maybe this wasn't the right time, maybe there wasn't a dog out there for them now, my aunts found out about a pair of pups - they were smaller than my aunts were looking for (they were used to Brittanys and this was a pair of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels) and a pair of pups rather than one dog, but something pulled them to the little dogs ... even when they found out the one sister in the pair of dogs, Annie, was also deaf and born with a heart condition.

These ladies (related to me, remember) had no hesitation even with Annie's "special-ness," which is and of its self is commendable, I think.

Deaf and a heart defect? We're up for that! Love them!!

My aunt drove several hours, picked up the pair of girls and the sisters fit in perfectly (Emma slowly accepting them)! Fate had found my aunts the perfect fit for their home and the girls had finally found their forever family. My aunts, being good new owners, quickly set up appointments to have Annie's heart evaluated, even when they had her previous medical information, and, when necessary, they started her on medication.

Over the past year and a half, Annie could often be found in a corner napping. A time or two she also quietly slipped in behind my aunt as she walked into the bathroom and was left in there. Did Annie bark? Panic? Tear things apart? No, my aunts would find Annie a few minutes later just napping in the bathroom. When not in a corner or quietly padding around, Annie could be found on top of a pillow ... or two or three pillows, if she could find that many - the more, the better in Annie's opinion! She even had a pillow in the car she could prop herself up on. Oh! And there was often the frequent joke that Annie's deafness was caused perhaps by her far from quiet sister, Molly, who is pretty much always barking - the opposite of her quiet sister, Annie.

As with special animals though, they are sometimes not with us long enough. Unfortunately, and very unexpectedly, Annie passed away last week after having a heart attack in the middle of the night and passing on the way to the vet. There's no denying that there is simply nothing that could have been done for Annie - she was happily romping around in the yard with her sister, Molly, and Emma just a few hours before passing. However, as we all know, the pain is not easily soothed even with facts like that.

Thank you, Aunt Sally & Aunt Dianne, for taking this sweet, special girl in and loving her as much as you did for as long as you could. She was loved right until the end and her fate could have been so different, her time with her sister so much shorter if you had not found them and adopted them together.

Though Annie's time with my aunts was far too short, she was deeply loved, spoiled and will forever be in our hearts.

Rest in Peace, sweet Annie

Dogs On Thursday: Loyalty

Dogs are loyal, dogs are kind...

even to one another

I heard of this video on Facebook and I shared it on there for my friends to view. I wanted to share it here for Dogs on Thursday too though. With all the devastation going on, loyalty and the will to survive are thriving, which is embodied and shown in there dogs, I believe. The one Spaniel mix (?) sits loyally by his friend, what looks to be a Springer Spaniel. I know I'm using "loyal" a lot, but, really, what other word is there for that?? I'm sorry, but for people to continually deny animals have emotions is ridiculous with examples of love and devotion like this.

Sadly, many of the animals have been misplaced, lost or abandoned during the craziness as unfortunately happens in situations like this.

Here's more than just some moving photos, here's the video its self!

Please go here for a translation of the people filming ("He has a collar. He must be someone's pet. He has a silver collar. He is shaking. He seems very afraid.") and for an update on the dogs (it's a good one!)

Dogs On Thursday

"Michael Vick was a dogfighter. He paid for it, he bet on it, he participated in the training, fighting, and killing of dogs with his own two hands." -The Lost Dogs

I've listened to people say "everyone deserves another chance" and "he's done a lot of good since then" and "he's doing so well in football and trying so hard to get his reputation back" and "it was what he grew up with" and "he talks about being humane and making good choices now". I've listened and hoped that he's changed.

But maybe his second chance should have been at McDonalds or Dunkin Donuts. No offense to the people who work there, I'm just saying that his second chance, if any, should not have been being paid millions and in the position of a "roll model". And really how much good has he done that he couldn't have done before? Would he still be fighting dogs if he didn't get caught? Oh yea, he already answered that for us - he said he would! The rescues who took on his severely broken dogs still haven't seen a good chunk of the money promised them either. "Doing good" might be NOT taking money for speeches and giving it to the dogs! The football thing just makes my stomach roll too - of course he's good, you assholes - he has to be! I mean, if he were one of his dogs, he probably would have been killed by now. What he grew up with? What's in his blood? Oh, that's awful! He was a professional athlete - he was exposed to many different -better and more humane- hobbies that he could have taken up! What I wouldn't give to take up vacationing or buying awesome real estate all over (of course, my money would probably go to helping animals and land preservation, but whatever...). Oh, and his lectures and speaking which he should be "commended for" ... um why doesn't he answer questions? Why are his "talks" on humanity scripted for him?

"As that dog lay on the ground fighting for air, Quanis Phillips grabbed its front legs and Michael Vick grabbed its hind legs. They swung the dog over their head like a jump rope then slammed it to the ground. The first impact didn’t kill it. So Phillips and Vick slammed it again. The two men kept at it, alternating back and forth, pounding the creature against the ground, until at last, the little red dog was dead." --The Lost Dogs

I digress! I came across a video the other day while reading an article about Vick. He was apparently given a key to the city of Dallas and the mayor was requesting it back, saying the honor and ceremony were not okayed or to be honored since he did not approve it (he kindly said Michael Vick did not fit the criteria - like a very positive, international diplomat). The video was at the very bottom from someone who had been at the Dallas gathering. Honestly, I thought the video was more important and news worthy than the article about Vick possibly being insulted. However, I guess the editor of the Philly-area news wouldn't ok with the idea of focusing on this and not the fact Vick might have his poor feelings hurt (kudos to whoever put this video in though).

Here's the point of my post and all I think I really need to shut all those "second chance" people up. This is Michael Vick below just months ago and it chilled my bones...

We Interrupt This Dogs On Thursday...

We interrupt this Dogs On Thursday post for a fish story! Please forgive me, but Dogs on Thursday always makes me think of my aunts and this story is to brag for them.

Some people question me when I say I've been a vegetarian for 10+ years, but I eat fish. "That's not a vegetarian," I get or sometimes people will start throwing out all the different terms for depending on what you eat. People don't understand I would have starved if I did not continue to eat seafood. It was nutty enough in my mom's mind that I wasn't eating "meat" let alone if I had cut out seafood. Seafood was not just a good past time of getting friends/neighbors together to crack open crabs or steam up pots of clams ... it was a way of life for my mom growing up. She and my aunt literally caught dinner some nights. So, seafood was included in a lot of the meals my mom made growing up.

Anyway, I digress. My aunt invited me out fishing this past Sunday and, at first, I did object. It was going to be her last boat trip out though (and, again, keep in mind how much this side of my family loves the water), so she was really disappointed when I said no and made one last attempt saying I could get some good photos. I gave in and went out. There's worse ways to spend one last beautiful day, right? Sunny, not too windy, 65F out or so ... you don't get too many days like that in November and usually my aunt likes to drag me out when it's cold/cloudy, rains off and on and the water is so choppy sea life (like rays) are coming to the surface of the water (this is not an exaggeration, it's a true example of a day she took me out!), so I went... and I did get some gorgeous photos! There were birds in the reeds as we were going out into the bay including this beautiful Great Blue Heron which let us get pretty close for some good photos. Some are definitely worthy of maybe even selling, I think.

Anyway, after hours of driving down there, heading out into the bay, casting the lines out, putting on fresh bait (those things my aunt actually does for us) and waiting ... my mom got a nip! She said, "Oh, here we go" ... and then the fish was gone along with her bait no less, darn it! I had a line my aunt had baited with some blood worms and had reeled it in a couple times after it felt like something was messing with it. I reeled it in yet again to find this little perch. My aunt barely had time to brag about how she'd never heard of a perch being caught in the bay before when my mom said, "Sally, the line!" The other pole I had out by me obviously had something on it...

My aunt made me grab the pole, my mom grabbed all my stuff off my lap (my purse, my camera, my cell, etc). As I'm reeling and this fish is just running, the water breaks like you see in swordfish fishing and I just saw a huge splash - my mom and aunt saw the fish though and started freaking out! It went under the boat, to one side, to another and just as I was sure it was close enough to net/me to actually see under the water, it'd pull the line out again. It was a tough fight, I thought I was going over the side of the boat and into the water with this fish several times. The boat hundreds of yards away, stopped everything, came to the front of their boat and just watched! Let's just say, it's getting harder and harder for me to brush off my aunt when she's complimenting up a storm about me and fishing now.

After fighting for 25 minutes and a lot of cursing, this thing got in the boat thanks to my aunt's giant net which you could probably fit a small child in ... thank goodness because that's about how big this fish is! A 45 - 46 inch striped bass! It didn't even fit in the cooler!!! When we got in to dock, the entire place started talking about our fish. One man even pulled his truck up to ours and said, "You go out alone?" Ugh, yes sir, these three women just caught the biggest fish of the lady, thank you! Also, I'd like to say the cursing was entirely necessary, it took a day, but I have discovered several bruises on my thighs and a cut from the pressure of holding on to that pole.

My aunt said after cleaning it, that she got two 30 inch fillets out of the thing! My mom said she cut it and froze 11 large dinner portions out of it!! Ok, yes, I'm all about releasing (it's what I did with the perch) but this fish was as exhausted as I was, if not more. If I had released him, he would have just died. Wait... Dear Aunt Dianne, this fish recovered well in the cooler like you suggested and is living the good life in our fresh water lake out front. :)

Here's me, my proud aunt and the fish its self (because you gotta see it to believe it)...

Dogs On Thursday

It's been awhile, but I've got an appropriate "Dogs on Thursday" post. An article was recently posted that a friend of mine shared with her friends, including me and my friend Joyce. The article is here: http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=dw-vickdogs092110

"If Vick paid his debt to society (as he did, even becoming a Humane Society lecturer)" - I honestly couldn't read past that without getting angry. The entire article is twisted and awful. The dogs were saved thanks to the many people out there that know pits are good dogs, who believe that these pits bulls were not just fighting dogs, but individual animals deserving a chance.

I can't say if Vick's remorseful, but I can say that Vick had nothing to do with the rescue of those dogs!

Joyce responded best though: Well I had to reply. For this reporter to imply that {Vick} paid money to rehab his ex dogs is ridiculous. Faith at {Best Friends}("BF") told me that when {Vick} was initially released, his PR team called BF and asked if they would support his rehab. BF asked what would he be willing to help his ex dogs. Vicks PR team ended the conversation quickly and hung up. Where is the 1 million dollars that was noted in this article!? Here is my response to the reporter:

"Hi Dan,

I just read your article on Vick and his ex-dogs. You stated "Perhaps most remarkably, if it wasn’t for the high-profile nature of the Vick case and the quarterback’s ability to pay for their postrescue care (Vick reportedly spent a court-mandated $1 million on it), each of the dogs would’ve been destroyed." Would you please verify this statement? I am a big supporter of Best Friends Animal who received 23 of his ex dogs. http://www.bestfriends.org/ . I travel out there yearly to volunteer and know the founders personally. They have not received a dime to care for the Vick dogs from him. They have received money for their care from supporters like myself. So please tell me who received any money? ...

Also many say he was convicted of animal abuse, he was not, he was convicted of gambling and participating in dog fighting. He was not charged with animal abuse which he should have been on many many counts"

Coincidentally, a new book is being released (CHECK IT OUT!!! - The Lost Dogs), but somehow I think this article of lies, no matter how many responses like Joyce's there may be, is going to outshadow this book and these dogs (a lot can be seen here) that should be celebrated. Not stupid Vick. To prove my point? The top news in my area recently following this article has been the announcement of a new quarterback for our local team ... they named him - Vick! Sadly, this proves that some time, unverified "facts"(more like illegitimate excuses) and a handful of talent can allow you get away do anything. "You've gotta back a winner" one fan said. Awful...

I hope this inspires you in some way - whether it's to shake your head, pet the next dog you see that needs some love (even the most spoiled does) or consider pit bulls as better dogs, respond to this article of lies or adopt a dog ... I hope, if nothing else, it makes you think of the injustice.

Dogs On Thursday - a prayer

A DOG'S PRAYER FOR HIS OWNER

- O Lord of humans, make my master faithful to his fellow men as I am to him.
- Grant that he may be as devoted to his friends and family as I am to him.
- May he be open-faced and undeceptive as I am; may he be true to trust reposed in him as I am to his.
- Give him a face cheerful like unto my wagging tail.
- Give him a spirit of gratitude like unto my flicking tongue.
- Fill him with patience like unto mine that awaits his footsteps uncomplainingly for hours.
- Fill him with my watchfulness, my courage, and my readiness to sacrifice comfort or life itself.
- Keep him always young in heart and endowed with the spirit of play, as I am.
- Make him as good a man as I am a dog.
- And make him worthy of me, his dog.

~Amen~

Dogs On Thursday - Workin Girl

I have a new job and have already received one pay check. I'm pretty excited! What does this have to do with Dogs On Thursday? Well, take a look at this photo...

Puppies!!! Oh my goodness, I got to hold the cutest little beagle mix puppy who had been in with her sister that day from SOS Beagle Rescue to be spayed at the low cost spay/neuter clinic in the building where I'm working now. The wonderful woman who came to pick them up after they woke from surgery that night was nice enough to let us hold the cute little puppies, the one I'm holding and her sister who was solid red and white (the little girl I held had more of a ticked/freckled coat). They were adorable and definitely "mixes" the rescuer said since their ears were much longer than a Beagle's should be ... I just think it made them that much cuter though. What do you think? :) Who can complain about a job with puppies, right??

In an odd doggy case, we actually only have a handful of dogs right now where I'm working too - which is quite unusual! We're not intaking any dogs either at this time. Why??? Well, we're getting brand new kennels! We're knocking down the old dog kennels and putting in brad new ones which will be great for all the future dogs that come into the shelter I'm working at now. You can check out all the cool details here. Construction is suppose to start in the next week or two so hopefully by mid-April we'll be packed with dogs again in brand new, wonderful kennels piping them soft tunes to keep them calm.

Dogs On Thursday - Good people!

Did you read this post: Stalked?! True story! Awful, uncomfortable, terrifying experience! I wrote in the post towards the bottom, "I'm hoping to borrow or foster a big & barky or scarey looking, but nice dog that doesn't chase cats for the next few days." Well, after posting different versions of my awful experience (short, long, detailed or the quick version) on different social networks, a girl that graduated from high school with my older cousin wrote me and said her dog sounded perfect! How sweet! She even sent me pictures as if just saying he was big wasn't good enough ... and my is this dog really big! He's apparently half Bernese Mountain Dog and half St. Bernard.

When I say this guy is big, I mean he's a really big dog - that mix alone sounds pretty awesome to me and would definitely scare off any creepy guys, I think. What do you think? Here's a picture of the gorgeous dog this wonderful girl spoke of ... and he's pictured next to a man (though I cut him out for his own privacy, of course). Do you see what I mean when I say this dog is huge?! Ok, granted, he's standing on a snow bank, but still. When scared of the creepy plow guy, I just wanted a barky dog to stay in the house with me while I finished up cat sitting ... but a dog big enough to literally eat a man would've work too! Not to mention, what a throw off from the picture of the adorable, rolly poley puppy dog she had pictured on her profile. He was the cutest puppy and he is one handsome big guy now!

Thankfully I didn't need to borrow this big guy. I ended up staying with a friend for the last few days or at home and just visiting the cats a couple times a day to feed them and spend some time with them ... during the day and after a friend's boyfriend dropped off a very "manly" looking jeep in the driveway to make it look like I had company. Although there was one creepy guy, I am so excited about the exceptionally nice people that came forward too - like this wonderful girl who sent me photos of her dog and the former volunteer offering her boyfriend's jeep to leave in the driveway. There are so many things to be thankful for!

Dogs On Thursday - Top 10 Reasons A Dog Is The Best Valentine's Day Date + Peanut

This article was too cute not to share with the holiday coming up. One of my favorite ones from it? "2. If you worry your dog will destroy your lovely home four seconds after you step out the door, you can put him in a crate. The authorities frown upon this when it comes to dates." Hehehe. Hope you enjoy the rest too: Top ten reasons a dog makes the best Valentine's Day date

Have a good reason you want to share? Comment below! :)

~*~

Hello to Peanut! Peanut is a beautiful Lab/Shepherd mixed girl available for adoption through Pets Alive in New York state. I don't know what it is, but some Shepherd mixes just steal my heart. I guess I kinda just want to grab them, hug them and bury my face in their fluffy fur coats. I love that! It's also a habit I love to do with my Goldens. :)

Breed: Shepherd, Labrador Retriever [Mix]
Size: Large
Age: Young
Gender: Female

Peanut & Misty are sensitive & sweet Shepherd-Lab-Rottie mix sisters who never knew much about interacting with people when they arrived at Pets Alive. They were very fearful, but have quickly blossomed into loving & sweet dogs under the care of our dog staff. They think cats are for chasing so would do better in a home with no feline friends. Both will make wonderful companions!

Wishing you luck in finding a home and love forever, Peanut!

Dogs On Thursday - Layla

Snow. Snow. Snow. According to the groundhog, we're in for more snow!

The snow this winter has been anything from out of control to manageable, like the snow we had this weekend. It snowed, it looked pretty and, if it hadn't lightly snowed again the other night, it would all probably be gone by now. I like it like that. I like it to be pretty and then gone, not messy and gross and turn black from dirt or remain in giant ice piles in parking lots for weeks taking up spots. That's just no fun.

If I can make a request though, I'd like a decent amount of snow to go sledding. Not like the ridiculous amount of inches/feet that weekend in December where you can't leave and not the silly inch of fluff the other day. I'd like a handful of inches of packing snow to go sledding and to take some more cute pictures like this one of Sadie. I love Goldens in the snow! They're so adorable. I mean, all dogs are, of course (like Tali the Doberman in her sweaters) ... but there's something about Goldens.

And here's the cute pup I came across on Petfinder for this Dogs On Thursday post: Cute little Layla caught my eye as soon as I saw her while searching Petfinder. Look at that face! She's adorable, young, friendly and working on her crate training - sounds like a perfect pet.

Oddly enough, there's a Layla on the show I have on in the background right now too. Talk about coincidence!! Layla is being adopted out through Faith's Hope rescue out in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Read on for more information on Layla...

Breed: Pit Bull Terrier
Size: medium
Age: Baby
Gender: Female

This gorgeous puppy is Layla, a 3-month-old chocolate and white American Pit Bull Terrier that is sweet and friendly with every human she meets. Like most puppies, she need a home where the humans have the time and energy to devote to raising a young puppy. Formal obedience training is a requirement for adoption.

Layla is perfectly healthy, is crate trained and doing very well with the house training. She is currently being fostered in a home with an adult male pit bull and a kitty and is almost done with puppy kindergarten so she already knows a few obedience commands.

Dogs On Thursday - Elvira

Hooray! Hooray!! Another dogs on Thursday rolls around again.

This week, I'm spotlighting Elvira. Elvira is at North Shore Animal League in New York state. It's not an uncommon fact that large, black dogs have a much harder time finding a home, but look at that gorgeous face!

Elvira deserves a good home. Here is what the website says about this lovely girl, Elvira.

Breed: Labrador Retriever Mix
Adoption #: R120955
Gender: Female
Age: Young
Size: Medium

Don’t be fooled by Elvira’s shy demeanor when you first see her. She is full of spunk and ready to play. She loves going on walks and has lots of energy. She is smart, affectionate and loyal. And Elvira is a bit of a goofball. She needs someone who will be the pack leader and tell her what to do, so she can follow. She would benefit best with someone who will also take her out for lots of exercise to drain her energy. She is still a big puppy and needs to be active. So if you are looking for a happy, friendly pup with lots of love to spare, come to the Animal League and adopt Elvira today.

If you are interested in adopting Elvira, contact meganr@animalleague.org

Dogs On Thursday - Kia

Several years ago on my birthday, I was walking to class when I walked through a small puddle and ::bam:: fell right on my butt ... well, not right on my butt exactly as it would turn out. As I got up, looking around and completely embarrassed, I took a step or two and realized something was very wrong. I hobbled back to my apartment, almost blacking out in pain twice, got in my door, stripped off my clothes (I think the pain had me hot) and fell on the sofa. My roommate came out and offered to take me to the hospital. I said, "No, no. Call 911. I can't walk anymore than I already have!" As it turned out, I'd apparently broken my foot in two places.

Now, what does this little story have to do with today? Well, my very kind doctor LOVED his dogs - Rhodesian Ridgebacks. This post is for him (and in the hopes this lucky girl gets a home of her own). Here's the information on Kia out of Pets Alive...

Breed: Rhodesian Ridgeback, Lab (Mix)
Size: Large
Age: Adult
Breed: Female

I'm Kia. I'm about 5 years old. I used to have a warm bed to sleep in. Now I find myself at Pets Alive. And even though these people are really wonderful, watching over me and taking good care of me, I really do wish for a new home with a warm bed to sleep in. Maybe yours? I'm not sure how I feel about very young children, but older ones would be rather nice. I'm not a cat person.

Good luck in the new year, Kia!
