Tori

Aw, look at Tori! This girl with the interesting mug shot is located in Utah at Best Friends Animal Society. That cute little tongue hanging out makes Ben pop to mind. He's hard to get a photo of and often has his tongue sticking out - with his nervous personality and habit of hissing, the tongue out just seems to add insult to injury. There's also a Tori at the sanctuary right now too.

This kitty obviously brings a lot of others to mind for me, but for more information about the Best Friends' Tori, read on:

Breed: Domestic short hair
Gender: Female
Age: Adult
Size: Medium

Frightened little bear.

Tori is the cutest cat. But she kind of freezes when you pet her like, "This isn't going to hurt, is it?" Talk about a darling who hasn't had much love in her life.

Tori came from a shelter in Pahrump, Nevada that closed down because it had fallen into disrepair. More than 800 cats were there, neglected and ignored. Tori was one of them, and she's still unsure about life.

But she tries! She wants to love you. She just doesn't know where to begin - or whether you're going to hurt her.

Do you have the patience and compassion to reach out to someone like Tori? Other pets shouldn't be a problem. With her fears, adults might be best. But all she really needs is someone to take her under their wing.

Another new cat...

I am up early to take care of my parents' place while they are away and I have this nasty habit of not being able to fall back to sleep once I'm awake.

Speaking of the farm, yesterday afternoon I released Zeus, another new barn cat for my parents' farm. She (yes, a female named Zeus - made no sense to me either, but I wanted to keep the name the shelter gave her) has been locked up since right around Christmas. I should have known she might need more time, but truly I don't think it would have made a difference. After being frozen in place for weeks now, she shot out of the cage and I'm not sure she'll be back or if we'll even know if she is since she's like a statue with people around.

I could have simply opened the crate door and let Zeus come out in her own good time, but no, I tapped on her crate to get her out. I wanted to see what direction she ran in when she realized she was free. Zeus crept out slowly, found her way to the wooden planks where we have two horse feeders attached, then she bolted across the entire horse pasture and into the wood's behind our neighbor's.

I hope she returns, but I'm really not sure.

Cybil

Look at that face! It belongs to a rumored sweety, Cybil. Cybil is located in Utah at Best Friends Animal Society. Check out Cybil's profile:

Breed: Domestic medium hair
Gender: Female
Age: Adult
Size: Medium

What's silly-sweet?

That's what Cybil is! She's sweet because she meows when she meets you, and she loves to be petted. But she's silly because she hates being picked up, and she's a little smarty pants with the other cats. (Though they seem to get along with her anyhow!)

Cybil is a beautiful diluted calico, fully declawed from her former life, and she's got great big feet. So cute!

She came from a terrible hoarding situation in which hundreds of cats were neglected out in Pahrump, Nevada. At eight years old, she's one of the more mature ones from that bunch. And somehow, she never lost her friendliness, despite the trauma. She does have a little litter box issue - the adoption folks can tell you more. But she's a true survivor, and she really deserves a home for living through what she lived through with such grace. And staying so silly-sweet!

Can Cybil be your cat? "Pretty please?"

How beautiful is Griselle?? It's not the best picture of her, but you can't deny she's really pretty! And you can't see it in the photo, but she's got a cute little stubby tail too.

The "Dumbest Moments in Business 2008"

This is from "Dumbest Moments in Business 2008" (http://www.walletpop.com/specials/fortune/dumbest-moments-in-business-2008). I didn't want to bore you with all the different ones, so here are just some of my favorites.

- "Detroit Pleads Poverty in Style": Like someone arriving at a food bank in a limousine, the chief executives of the three major U.S. automakers spark outrage when they fly their corporate jets to Washington D.C. to beg Congress for a multi-billion dollar bailout...

- "An iPhone App for Just $999.99": The release of the new Apple iPhone in July introduces to the masses the world of mobile video games and other time-sucking applications designed by non-Apple software developers -- most of them available for less than $10. But one application sneaks past Apple's gatekeepers and onto the company's new App Store: "I Am Rich," a $999.99 screen-saver whose sole feature is a glowing red jewel. Apple gets blasted for making the application available for sale and then quietly removing it, but the real losers? The eight suckers who bought it. -- By Michal Lev-Ram, Fortune reporter

- "Sex for Oil": This fall, the division of the Department of Interior responsible for granting leases for energy exploration and production in federal waters is caught with its pants down. The agency's Inspector General finds that staffers were taking gifts, having sex and engaging in illegal drug use with employees of some of the oil companies they oversee...

- "McCain's Economic Denial": At least he warned us: On the morning of Sept. 15, as Lehman Brothers declares bankruptcy, Republican presidential candidate John McCain declares "the fundamentals of this economy are strong." By day's end, the Dow falls more than 500 points, the date becomes known as Black Monday, and McCain starts backpedaling fast...

I've taken a lot of photos of Emma at work over time ... they're mostly for Joyce since she loves her so much :)

Tony

This boy is sweet, sweet Tony and there's not enough good things to say about him. He's such a fighter. It's been more than a year since his diagnosis with Acromegaly and he's still going strong!

Acromegaly causes the body to produce excessive amounts of growth hormone. This can lead to a number of life-threatening complications, including heart disease (which Tony has now, also). In addition, the excess growth hormone interferes with the body's ability to utilize insulin and often leads to uncontrollable diabetes.

You can read more about him and the other special cats at the sanctuary here.

Predictions from a veterinary blogger for 2009

I saw a post sent out referring to this blog entry: Predictions from a veterinary blogger for 2009.

I thought it was pretty interesting and that some of you might enjoy it. It details ideas like:
- Bizarre pets will become more popular
- Pedigree animals will continue to decline in popularity
- Animal rights will continue to move up the political agenda
- Legislation to control pet ownership will increase.
- There will be further episodes of the importation of exotic diseases into the UK

Jewel 2

Meet beautiful Jewel 2. Look at those blue eyes!

Jewel 2 is located in Utah at Best Friends Animal Society. Here's more information about Jewel 2:

Breed: Siamese
Gender: Female
Age: Adult
Size: Medium

Jewel has amazing blue eyes that make you want to reach out and pet her cute little mug!

Nonetheless, Jewel can show two very different personalities when greeting her. If she is lying down or sleeping she can be very timid and scared and will need someone patient when teaching Jewel to trust humans again. She has come a long way and does accept pets on her head and shoulders.

However, Jewel is very food motivated which is great for training. When you have food she is your best friend and will let you to pet her, sit with her, rub her all over and she will follow you for food while rubbing her body around your legs!

Jewel was rescued along with more than 800 other cats in the Pahrump, Nevada desert, living in squalor at a rescue organization that had fallen apart. The poor cats weren't getting basic care or any love at all. She just wants a place where she can belong.

Jewel kind of bats at the other cats sometimes, but she's OK with them. Being an "only cat" would be fine with her, but either way!

Won't you give Jewel your love for life?
